Danger, Will Robinson!

"That does not compute..."

Lost in Space — a tale of two robots

You are not a real geek unless you know certain classic sci-fi catch phrases. One of them is from the 1960s campy TV show: Lost in Space.

At the labs, students were learning about setters in Java and how, if you are not careful, you can set a property of an object and forget to look at the side-effects such a change might make. For example: if you change (set) the radius property of a circle, you must recognize immediately that the area will change and make that change as well.

Students were instructed to write "Danger, Will Robinson!" in their code comments to help them remember. The humor was lost on them. It lives on, though — as the name of our DWR & Eureka Moments log.

Netflix released a reboot of the series in 2018. It's not as campy — Its robot is decidedly more intimidating.
